Parking Permits for In-home Childcare Workers

I am reaching out to the Federation of Civic Associations and other civic associations that fall partially or completely within a Residential Parking Permit District to inform you of an upcoming public hearing item that Traffic and Parking Board members will vote on at the October 23 Traffic and Parking Board meeting. Can the Federation of Civic Associations please share the following information with their individual members. Mayor Justin Wilson has proposed an amendment to the residential parking permit restrictions that would allow for the issuance of residential parking permits for in-home childcare workers, as is the current practice for in-home health care workers under provision (a) (1) (ii) of Section 5-8-77. The proposed code change would be expanded from in-home health care workers to also allow residents who employ an in-home childcare worker to apply for one residential parking permit per year for their in-home childcare worker.

Further details on this proposed code change will be available in the October Traffic and Parking board docket that will be posted online a week prior to the October 23rd meeting. The October 23 meeting of the Traffic and Parking Board will be held at 7:00pm in person in the City Council Chambers at 301 King Street, Alexandria. People can also participate in the meeting via Zoom. Any comments that the Federation of Civic Associations and other civic associations wish to get to the Traffic and Parking Board members can be sent to me via email.

Thank you, Sheila McGraw

This project will redesign the intersection of King Street, Callahan Drive, and Russell Road to enhance mobility, access, and safety for all roadway users, as well as improve access to Alexandria Union Station and King Street Metro Station. The project will also modify the existing signal timing to enhance movement through the intersection.

Site activity is expected to begin the first week of October. Work crews may be present onsite Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Construction activity impacting roadway and sidewalk access is limited to Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents and commuters should plan for potential delays.

The City of Alexandria invites you to learn more about this project at the King and Commonwealth Infrastructure Investments Open House taking place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 4 at Alexandria Union Station, 110 Callahan Drive. Proposed Elimination of DASH AT2

The information below comes to us from the Seminary Hill Citizens' Association.

We want to make everyone aware of the Alexandria Transit Vision (ATV) Plan, a project led by the City of Alexandria and DASH. One of the elements being considering through this project is the elimination of the AT2 bus route, which would remove all public transportation service for Janney's Lane and Seminary Road between North Quaker Lane and North Howard Street. For the Douglas MacArthur community, this is the only bus that provides a public transportation option to the school for parents, students, and staff.

If you have questions or concerns about the elimination of the AT2 route, we urge you to do the following:

  • Complete the ATV plan survey before November 22

  • Attend upcoming community meetings listed below

  • Email the DASH project team directly (transitvision@alexandria.gov)

  • Contact Bill Pfister with your concerns (wcpfister@gmail.com)

A few concerned neighbors are also working to arrange AT2-specific discussions with the city and DASH planners and we want to hear from you to better inform these discussions. A decision will likely be made around the end of November, so we need to move quickly on this.

Please email Bill Pfister (wcpfister@gmail.com) as soon as possible if you are concerned about the elimination of the AT2 route.

Upcoming Public Meeting
Wednesday, November 13 | 5:30 p.m.*
Alexandria City Hall (Room TBD)
301 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22314
*Public hearing to be held at start of November meeting of ATC Board of Directors.

Suggestion for Completing the Survey by November 22
If you disagree with the elimination of the bus service, select “strongly disagree” to the four questions, and in the space provided explicitly name the elimination of the AT2 (and AT5/6 if applicable). As applicable please provide information that explains your ridership and any hardships that would come about due to its elimination.
