Top 6 Things You Need to Know from Our Duke Street Meeting
and what you can do right now!

(43 neighbors attended — thank you!)

 1. The sliplane is no longer being considered. City engineers confirmed it is not part of the current WTR/Telegraph project design.

 2. We still need clarity on how all these plans fit together. There are multiple overlapping efforts:

  • Duke Street Land Use Plan (long-term development vision)

  • DSIM / Transitway (bus rapid transit & corridor redesign)

  • WTR/Telegraph intersection project (near-term roadway & ramp changes)

Residents repeatedly asked how these connect — and how today’s “interim” projects align with the long-term vision.

 3. Traffic & safety were the top concerns. From 1,700+ survey responses, residents consistently flagged congestion, pedestrian/bike safety, and difficulty getting around.

 4. The WTR/Telegraph project is moving forward. Planned changes include narrower roadway sections, more accessible sidewalks, a signalized Telegraph ramp with a left-turn lane, and relocated bus stops. Construction could last 2.5–3 years.

5.  Cut-through traffic remains a major concern. Many neighbors questioned whether new ramp access could increase traffic on WTR. The City believes it may reduce congestion, but acknowledged tradeoffs.

6.  Public input is limited at this stage. The design is at 30%. VDOT requires written questions before determining whether a public hearing is needed.
